Project: NKUT Re-design

UX/UI Design
Project Overview
No Kill Utah (NKUT) is an initiative of the Best Friends Animal Society. The purpose of the initiative is to eliminate the killing of cats and dogs in shelters throughout Utah. The Project was focused on redesigning the original NKUT website to increase engagement with its users.
Responsibilities:
  • User research
  • User persona
  • Ideation
  • Wireframing
  • User testing
Tools: FigJam, Figma, Balsamiq
Research:
Anonymous survey and Interviews

We sent out an anonymous survey that received 32 responses, followed by five 1-1 interviews. We were looking for how people feel about adoption, shelters and non-profits . We also wanted to know what types of information people would expect to see on a website designed to rehome, adopt and save animals. See more of our research process here.

“I am more likely to adopt a pet from high-kill shelter because they have a sob story.” -Caitee
78% of people have adopted or will adopt a future pet
Can be difficult to find a specific breed or detailed information about a potential pet when adopting
“Adopting makes me feel like I'm contributing to solving an issue.”-Anonymous survey response
User Persona

Based on our research, we crafted our user persona to guide us throughout the rest of our project.

Ideation:
Feature Focus

Using our Persona and research, we brainstormed some ideas that would meet our users needs and address their pain points. Below are the three areas we decided to focus on.

Use of Color
Adjust the color of the site to make it more engaging
Adoption Page
  • Expanded filters options
  • New owner success stories
Resources
Expand the list of resources for those looking into adoption
Storyboard

Jenny researches different organizations and options to find a dog.
After finding the No Kill Utah (NKUT) site, Jenny decides make a difference and adopt.
After searching the available dogs, Jenny finds several that would fit her lifestyle and makes plans to meet them.
At a local no-kill shelter, Jenny falls in love with the first dog she meets.

Jenny is happy to have a new companion and is glad she could help a rescue a dog in need.
Wireframes

We tested three mobile wireframe options using a modified AB test to get an idea of what mobile layout users would prefer. Based on that information we went with option C to build out our prototype. See desktop wireframes here.

User Friendly
Balance of information and graphics
Pertinent info and links immediately visible

Key Findings from Prototype Testing

We tested three wireframe options using a modified AB test to get an idea of what mobile layout users would prefer. Based on that information we went with option C to build out our prototype.

No indication of which filters were selected
Filter fields would not collapse/scroll to be able to “find a pet”
Unable to return to filters to edit search

Conclusion:

We redesigned the NKUT website, adding more color and organizing the information and structure throughout the site. We also focused on expanding the adoption page. By allowing the user more control over the filters, they are able to quickly see which animals are available to adopt.
